Sanaig Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Islay :: Scotland

Kilchoman Distillery is a small family run farm distillery based on the rugged west coast of Islay.  The distillery was established by Anthony Wills in 2005 and is the first distillery to be established on Islay in over 124 years.  The idea was to build a new distillery which took whisky production back to its roots.  Kilchoman produces its 100% Islay single malt from barley which is grown in fields surrounding the distillery and completes every stage of the whisky-making process at the distillery, including traditional floor malting.  Kilchoman is the only distillery in Scotland to do this.  Kilchoman is now very much a family affair: Anthony and wife Kathy are joined by their three sons:  James, Peter and George.

Sanaig, a small rocky inlet North West of the distillery is the name given to this continuously available release.
Sanaig is a composition of 50% bourbon casks and 50% Oloroso sherry. It has a predominantly sherry cask influence owing to the significant time spent in oloroso sherry Hogsheads.
These aged oloroso casks contribute a drastically transformed depth of colour and character compared to the mostly Bourbon cask matured Machir Bay.

“A beautiful marriage of bourbon and sherry maturation balanced with classic Islay peat smoke and light citrus sweetness” Anthony Wills, Founder.

Matured for around 4-5 years.

Beech wood.

Soft cooked fruits with caramel and vanilla now evident.

Toffee, peat smoke and citrus with a lingering sweetness.

A lovely balance of peat smoke, fruit and sweetness.

Sanaig was awarded Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky - Non Age Statement at the IWSC 2016.
