Calcagno’s vineyards lie on ancient lava flows shaped over centuries in Passopisciaro, between the Etna and the Alcantara river. A strong smell of Spanish broom pervades. Here, thanks to an exceptional climate and geography, is produced one of the best wines of Sicily. The vineyards were planted by the Calcagno family in the early twentieth century, by working a rough ground and removing stones. The dark colour of the lava stones, the yellow of the Spanish broom combined with the changing green of the vineyard, create a contrasting landscape like a natural work of art.
